Home Run Inn – Meat Lover’s Pizza

2016-03-17 13.40.34.jpg

I like this pizza.  This should be no surprise as I have loved everything from Home Run Inn so far, and this is basically the pepperoni pizza plus sausage and bacon.  What’s interesting is I usually don’t like sausage or bacon on my pizza, but it actually enhanced this one in my opinion.  I theorize the strong cheese flavor or Home Run Inn pies helped dilute the flavor of the bacon and sausage.  Those two meaty toppings usually dominate the taste of a pizza too much for my liking, but the balance was perfect here.

I’m sad now because I cannot find any more of their varieties in stores besides the ones I’ve already tried (pepperoni, margherita, cheese and meat lovers).  I’ll see what I can do to acquire some more.

Purchased at HEB for $6.98.  32oz, $.22/oz.  Solid deal.  More than the average price per ounce ($.18) for pizzas I’ve tried, but the quality and taste more than make up for this premium.

Amy’s Pizza – Vegan Margherita with Daiya Cheese

2016-03-04 22.18.54.jpgI can tell this is a good quality pizza many will like, but it’s not for me.  I tasted more sauce than anything, and the tomatoe sauce (while good) is usually my least favorite part of a typical pizza.  Not enough cheese flavoring or anythign else to balance it out.  I cannot see myself purchasing this one again although I oddly enough found myself liking it just a tiny bit more with every bite.

For those interested, here’s an excerpt from the Amy’s website:

“What makes this pizza unique is our use of Daiya’s shredded mozzarella-style cheese alternative, which is free of cholesterol, lactose and other common allergens but full of flavor. It stretches and melts and tastes like the real thing. This is a pizza that provides our vegan and dairy-free customers with a familiar cheese pizza experience and it’s one that everyone will love.”

Even though this pizza is not a favorite of mine, I do recommend giving it a shot if you want pizza but have any concerns with cholesterol or lactose.  Definitely worth a shot.

Purchased at HEB for $5.98.  13.50 oz, $.44/oz.

California Style White (Hand Tossed)

2016-03-02 22.26.31

“Very bland.”

“…all crust and no toppings…”

“…the toppings barely had any taste to them.”

These are some of the ways I described California Pizza Kitchen’s crispy thin crust “White” pizza half a year ago.  The hand tossed crust  “California Style White” is the exact same thing but with tomatoes and a thicker hand tossed crust.  Although I did enjoy this one more (the tomatoes helped), it still fell flat and suffers from the same complaints as the original.  It was bland.  I mainly tasted crust.  The crust was actually very good and I love me some bread, but I prefer to taste something in addition to yeast when I eat pizza.

Purchased at HEB for $5.86.  15.7oz, $.37/oz.  4 out of 10.

Dr Oetker – Pizza Mozzarella

2016-02-29 01.05.45.jpgEvery time I eat a Dr Oetker pizza I’m reminded why this is one of my favorite brands.  Absolutely perfect.  Perfect balanced flavors, perfect crust, all around perfect taste.  Nothing can top the joy of a mouthful of Dr Oetker mozzarella.  I only regret that I did not attempt to pick up a slice with a fork like pictured on the box.  I’m not sure that’s possible.

Purchased at HEB for $3.98.  11.50 oz, $.35/oz.  10 out of 10!
